Samsung OmniaHD, world's first cell phone that shoots 720p video

omniahd.pngDozens of announcements are blasting out of the huge Mobile World Conference cell phone convention in Barcelona right now, but let's just cut through all the me-too teases and show you the highlight: the Samsung OmniaHD, the first cell phone ever to shoot 720p video.

Along with that crispy HD video, the phone also shoots 8-megapixel stills. Check out that display, a 3.7-inch 16:9 OLED touchscreen at 640x360. Nice. Plus, there's plenty of storage with your choice of an 8GB or 16GB internal drive, and a MicroSDHC slot where you can store 32GB more.

Besides all that, it's packing speedy 7.2Mbps wireless connectivity, with all the Internet apps to go along with it. Can you see where this is going? We heard about 1080p cell phone chips last week, 8-megapixel cameraphones available in the U.S., and now this HD-shooting cell phone — will these powerful handsets soon take the place of point-and-shoot cameras and camcorders, too?

The burning question remains: How much will it cost and when can we get one? Alas, Samsung's not talking pricing or release date yet.
